Provides support to individuals and families facing unexpected financial emergencies.

Who Can Apply

  • You are at least 18 years of age;
  • You are a legal resident of the United States or Canada;
  • You intend to apply for assistance either for yourself, or for a person living in your home;
  • Your household has at least one active bank account OR has filed a Federal Tax Return within in the past two years;
  • You have regular access to a computer and the Internet and can check your email and the Modest Needs website daily for the entire time that your application is active;
  • You have the ability to access a scanner or a fax machine for long enough to scan and upload or fax the documentation to support your application that Modest Needs will request from you during the grant application process;
  • If you rent (rather than own) your home, your household has a legal lease that your landlord and a member of your household both have signed. This lease must show the monthly cost of your rental, whether or not you pay all of this amount yourself;
  • Your household passes our ‘income’ and ’employment’ tests, both of which are explained in the application process.

Helpful Tips

  • You’ll need an active email account to register with Modest Needs. If you don’t have one, it is recommended to create a Gmail account.
  • Taking a moment to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page can help you navigate the process easily.
  • If you believe you’ve called Modest Needs and you’re asked to pay a fee, DO NOT PROVIDE IT. Instead, hang up, carefully dial the number below, and call to report the problem.

How Does It Work

Submit Your Application

An application may be completed by either an individual or a licensed social worker. To begin the process, submit your application along with the required documentation to Modest Needs. If you have any questions regarding your eligibility, please reach out via email at doiqualify@modestneeds.org for assistance.

Prequalification

A Client Advocacy Specialist reviews your application to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. If everything checks out, your application will be prequalified and listed on their website.

Donor Review

Once prequalified, your application becomes visible to donors who can read about your situation. They may recommend your application for funding based on their preferences.

Final Review and Funding

When enough donations are raised to cover your request, Modest Needs conducts a final review to confirm everything is in order. If approved, they will pay your vendor directly for the assistance you need. Afterward, you’ll be asked to thank the donors for their support.
