The Florida Youth Leadership Academy (FYLA) began in December 2007 in Orlando, Florida. Initially a professional development project by the Florida Department of Children and Families and Connected by 25, it has evolved into a statewide mentorship and leadership program for youth in the child welfare system. FYLA aims to inspire young leaders through building healthy relationships, exploring leadership development, and engaging them within their communities.
Who Can Apply
- Currently under the supervision of a CBC lead agency or subcontractor.
- In 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and attending a high school program.
- Able to maintain school performance while participating in the program.
- At least 16 years old and not yet 19 years old by September 1, 2024.
- Demonstrated potential benefit from leadership training.
- No adjudicated felonies within the past six months.
- Agree to abide by the Code of Conduct.

Helpful Tips
- Fill out and submit your application along with a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, Independent Living Specialist, or foster parent to Cal.Walton@myflfamilies.com.
- Attend all trips as they are mandatory unless approved by the FYLA coordinator.
- Communicate at least two weeks in advance if unable to attend a trip or activity and coordinate transportation.
- Try not to miss monthly mentor calls to discuss any concerns or questions.
